This is a very informative and entertaining description, almost day-by-day, of the transformation of farmland on the outskirts of Fresno, Calif. into a bustling, major military base supporting the US efforts during WWII. Three different areas were developed within months, including Camp Pinedale and the Fresno Fairgrounds, and the author uses personal reminiscences as well all newspaper and government accounts to paint a very readable, detailed, sometimes humorous panorama. Loads of photos and sidebars. Don't miss the funny recollections of Paul Barile, a young local, would-be-pilot, who simply could not conquer his tendency to motion sickness. A highlight of the war in Fresno was a visit by Marlene Dietrich, who entertained "the boys" one magical evening. Fresno was never the same! Highly recommended.
